Google’s New AI-Powered Review Response Feature

Google is testing a new feature within Google Business Profile (GBP) that automatically generates suggested responses to customer reviews using AI. Business owners can review, edit, and publish these responses directly from their Google Business Profile account. For most multi-location and enterprise brands, the impact should not be significant at scale in the near term. Individual franchisees and business owners who log into their own Google Business Profile directly, rather than through an agency or enterprise reputation management platform, may already see this feature if their account falls within Google’s test group. The feature is currently limited to select Google Business Profile accounts and has not been broadly released through agency, franchise, or enterprise reputation management platforms. Availability varies by location and account. One caveat worth flagging, originally reported by Search Engine Land, noted that in some tests users could trigger AI replies in bulk, and accounts differ on whether those bulk replies still require manual review before they publish. Until Google clarifies this, treat AI reply settings in your account as something to verify, not assume.

Our Perspective

We view this as an efficiency tool, not a replacement for reputation management. AI can help businesses respond to reviews faster, but customer trust is built through authentic, thoughtful responses that reflect the brand experience. A generic response may improve response rates, but it won’t necessarily improve customer perception. For brands managing reviews at scale, human oversight remains essential, especially when responding to customer concerns or negative experiences. While this new feature will impact GBP reviews over the long term, it’s important to remember to follow proven best practices and use AI as a starting point, rather than allowing AI to craft a final response. Consider the following best practices as this feature continues to roll out.

For positive reviews:

  • Personalize the response when possible.
  • Reference the customer’s experience.
  • Avoid repetitive, generic language.

For negative reviews:

  • Always review and edit AI-generated responses.
  • Ensure the response reflects empathy and accountability.
  • Follow established escalation processes for service issues.

For all reviews:

  • Maintain your brand voice.
  • Focus on quality over speed.
  • Continue responding consistently, since review engagement remains an important local trust and visibility signal.
  • Confirm whether your account requires manual approval before AI-drafted replies publish.

In Summary

This feature is still in early testing. Google has not made a broad announcement, and availability remains inconsistent across accounts. We’re tracking the rollout and will let you know when it reaches your account, including whether replies publish automatically or wait for review. Until then, keep human review in your reply process, and expect Google to continue expanding AI’s role in local search and reputation management.
